The Nigerian Weekly Law Reports (NWLR) was established in 1985 by
Chief Ganiyu Oyesola Fawehinmi, SAN (1938-2009). It was the first
of its kind in Nigeria and Africa.
The Nigerian Weekly Law Reports (NWLR), as the name implies, is
published on a weekly basis. Its maiden edition was released on
Tuesday, 1st October 1985 with the following message from the
founder who also served as the founding Editor:
“NIGERIAN WEEKLY LAW REPORTS starts today, Tuesday the 1st of
October, 1985. My aim is to make the laws of Nigeria available to
all and sundry as quickly as possible. The decisions of the courts
which constitute a fundamental part of our laws must be made more
readily accessible with a view to ensuring that the learned men at
the Bar and on the Bench are more learned and the entire spectrum
of the Administration of Justice more JUST.”
The Reports continues to set records and standards in law
reporting in Nigeria. It is the longest consecutive running Law
reports in the history of legal profession in Nigeria and Africa,
already reaching a milestone of 38 unbroken years for a weekly
publication.
As it marches on to is fourth decade of existence, the Nigerian
Weekly Law Reports is poised to embark on an exciting adventure in
modern law reporting. The electronic version of the reports is
being rolled out to make them more readily available and
friendlier as definitive tools of legal research and knowledge.
The dream of the founder of the Nigerian Weekly Law Reports lives
on in the publication after his demise.
